Most people at Bonnaroo‘s The Other Tent on Sunday weren’t that keen on waiting 20 minutes past start time for Swedish electronic-pop darling Robyn to take the stage. But it was hard to hold that against her for long.
Why? Well, it’s not cool to give someone a hard time on their birthday — and Sunday marked the big 3-2 for Robyn. And fans didn’t need to hear more than 30 seconds of her criminally sleek dance-pop for all to be forgiven. Onstage, she’s like a cool, uncalculated Lady Gaga — a powerhouse vocalist who’s effortlessly gathered an arsenal of moves, tics and flourishes all her own.
“It’s so hot in here,” she said. “And it’s my birthday, so you’re going to have to help me out and dance!”
Fans at least didn’t have to wait long to hear her best song: a spare, heartbreaking ballad (with a Kraftwerkian beat) called “Dancing On My Own.”
