Starting off its New Deal spring tour, Pensive, a band from San Diego hit The Stir in Safford with the energetic force of a small tsunami.
Friday evening, April 3, found The Stir overflowing with Pensive fans, both those who have followed Pensive’s beginnings, as well as new fans who have recently discovered the tunes of the powerpop rock band. The four-piece band was begun by best friends Patrick Smith, lyrics and guitar, and Julio Godoy, vocals and guitar. Recent additions to the band are Cody Moore, bass and vocals, and Jeremy Hough on the drums.
More than 200 fans paid the nominal fee of $5 to spend the evening rocking to earsplitting vibes. Randy Clonts, director of The Stir, said, “Where else in the Valley can you get such great entertainment for only $5?”

The first spring concert at The Stir was successful. As is usual at most venues, several bands were booked to play with the headlining band. The evening lineup featured a total of seven bands, several local, including Honor Bed of Safford and Hailey’s Bedtime Story of Thatcher. Other bands came from metropolitan areas. The Get Along Gang drove in from Tucson, and The Riff AZ came down from Mesa.
“We put out the word that we needed bands for the April concert, and the response was overwhelming,” Clonts said. “It’s a shame that we won’t be able to keep The Stir open through the summer like we have in the past. With the economy the way it is, we are having fewer contributions coming in. We’ll have to downsize. But, we will be open for major events like the Zombie Prom, and if Pensive can come back for a fall tour.”
After the concert, Pensive members were available to chat with fans and sign autographs. South Park posters advertised their new reality series, “Pensive, the Band Next Door.” The first video episode aired Friday, April 17, with the second in the series airing late evening on April 24. The series is eight episodes long and follows the band through its daily life and touring adventures. Each new episode will be posted to the Web site on Fridays.
As the evening concluded and the bands were packing up their gear, vocalist Julio Godoy said, “Safford audiences are simply the best. To see everyone singing our lyrics right along with us is amazing! When our tour starts out with this kind of support, I know that the rest of the tour will be fantastic.”
No matter how tight its schedule is, Pensive always makes time for a Safford concert.
