Ms. Ware has the voice for it, able to make notes tremble and swell and swoop. But she’s by no means a show-off — she has the judgment to make every technical flourish sound natural.
And that, in turn, brought out the single-minded obsession of her songwriting: the promise to cling to love at any cost. When she sang someone else’s material, it was Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love”: “Got a thing for you and I can’t let go,” it insists. A newer song added to the American release of the album, “Imagine It Was Us,” hinted at the chords of the Michael Jackson hit “Rock With You,” while promising her love interest, “I would wait all night.”
