I was very excited to get to see Jessie Ware and her brand of what I call "baby making music". She has a root in Soul while making use of old school 808 sounds and samplers, all the while being ethereal and airy. As a side note, the guitar player was playing this cool telecaster/stratocaster hybrid body which I fell in love with.
Jessie's voice is magnificent live. She hit all the notes with power and with feel and soul and the crowd hung on every word. The Chicago audience knew all of her songs and proceeded to sing along and wildly responded when she named the next song to be performed. At one point she seemed surprised there were so many "blokes" in the audience. She basically included almost every song from her Devotion album and as an added bonus, she infused the great Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" into the set.
If you have never seen or heard her work, she writes a style of music that on first listen has a smooth and soothing appeal. Even if you are unfamiliar with the songs, you will hear a nice neo soul vibe and its a easy listen with a groove. There is no doubt in my mind some of her songs are the soundtrack to making out at the least.
It was a sold out show for Ms. Ware and Chicago welcomed her with open arms.
