Best of Martin's Photo Blog 2012

As the artists on Cherrytree will tell you, I'm seldom without my trusty camera.  I took a lot of photos this year and it was hard picking "the best," but below is my attempt.  Captions are under each photo.  For the first time, I'm also going to put together an audio companion to "The Best of Martin's Photo Blog 2012" so listen for it on Dec 31st 2012 and Jan 1st 2013 on  :-)

Jan 2012 - On the set of LMFAO's "Sorry for Party Rocking," I snapped this photo inside the Party Rock house that was built on the Universal lot in Hollywood, CA especially for this video shoot.  You can spot Redfoo, Q, Shufflebot, Nate & Party Mike among other members of the Party Rock Crew in this pic.  See the "Sorry for Party Rocking" video here.

The Cherrytree crew went to Indianapolis in Feb 2012 to watch LMFAO perform with Madonna at the Super Bowl half-time.  This is an American institution people!  I took this photo of Redfoo on our way into the stadium before the momentous event.  Watch the half-time performance here.

Directly after the Superbowl in Indiana, the Cherrytree gang headed north to complete the rescheduled shows of the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour of Canada.  The star-studded bill included the elegant Natalia Kills pictured here performing a stirring rendition of her hit "Mirrors" with DJ Virman from Far East Movement on turn table duties.  Watch the video for her collab with DJ Tatana, "You Can't Get in My Head (If You Don't Get in My Bed)," here.

I captured this shot of the ever-fresh Robyn on a little shopping jaunt through Venice, CA in early Feb 2012.  I don't think she ended up getting the hat but she rocked it with panache for this photo.

Pictured from left to right:  Kev Nish of Far East Movement, me, Redfoo & Prohgress of FM.  Man, this day was fun!  This photo was taken in early March in Amsterdam on the video shoot for "Live My Life" by Far East Movement which featured FM's Cherrytree label-mate Redfoo dancing on top of a double-decker bus.  It was a school holiday in Holland so the set was bustling with kids asking for autographs and taking photos.  It was a cold day but that didn't stop anybody from having a blast.  Watch the "Live My Life" video here.

I captured this live-action photo of Matthew Koma in March 2012 performing on the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour of Europe which starred Redfoo & The Party Rock Crew, Far East Movement and Matthew Koma.  It lasted for 6 weeks and visited several countries in Europe playing to over 10,000 people per venue at times.  Listen to Matthew Koma's song "She"here.

April was Coachella time and in addition to watching captivating performances by Cherrytree artists Nero & Feist, I caught this sweltering DJ set from Fernando Garibay and snapped this photo.

Lots of work is done by Cherrytree recording artists at Hot Rocks Studios where I took this shot of Colette Carr in June 2012.  She was putting together the beginnings of her multi-installment "Skitzo" album release.  You can order "Skitszo" here and watch Colette's video for "F16" (from "Skitszo" Part 1) here.  Cherrytree Cola is always flowing at Hot Rocks and you can find out where to get it in your neck of the woods here.

July 2012 - Taken on the set of the "Turn Up the Love" video.  Pictured from left to right are Far East Movement members DJ Virman, J-Splif, Kev Nish and Prohgress.  For the video, the group recreated a quintessential Los Angeles swap meet with slightly altered booths that included Virman's Shoe Emporium, aka. "Hood Locker."  Watch the popular video here which features label-mates Cover Drive.

In Aug 2012, I traveled to Chicago to see Cherrytree recording artists Michael Kiwanuka and Nero perform at Lollapalooza.  It was a magical festival despite getting rain-delayed for a few hours on one of the days.  Nero played in front of over 15,000 people and I snapped this photo from the side of the stage.

I was very excited to be in this room and get a chance to take this photo.  Sting and Cherrytree label-mate Michael Kiwanuka met in Sep 2012 while Sting was recording in NYC.  They talked guitars and even traded licks on Sting's Martin acoustic.  File this under "I love my job." Watch Michael Kiwanuka's "Tell Me a Tale" video here.

In Oct 2012, I went back to NYC where Arjan Writes hosted a special event for HP at which Far East Movement performed an exclusive show.  There, I got to see FM play "Little Bird" - the song I produced for them on their album Dirty Bass - live for the first time.  It's the first time Cherrytree label-mate Feist has ever approved a sample of one of her songs (Caught a Long Wind from Feist's Metals album).  The photo above is a candid dressing room shot I took of FM's J-Splif, Prohgress & Kev Nish having a laugh.  It's how these guys are most of the time and it's a pleasure to be around their joy and positivity - it's contagious.  Watch Far East Movement's "Little Bird" video here and get a glimpse into the group's more emotional side.

In Dec 2012, Ellie Goulding played a rousing set at Gibson Amphitheater during KIIS-FM's Jingle Ball.  The performance culminated a big year for Ellie in which she saw her single "Lights" go to no. 1 on the US Top 40 radio chart and also become Billboard's no. 1 Pop song of 2012.  That made two in a row for Cherrytree since LMFAO garnered the same honor in 2011 for "Party Rock Anthem."  This shot was taken back stage just after the show.  Watch Ellie's "Anything Could Happen" video here.

London-based New Zealand transplant and hip hop-rockabilly producer/musician wunderkind Willy Moon stopped by The Cherrytree House to play my Gibson SJ-200 and sample a little Cherrytree Cola.  I captured him here in mid-sip.  The visit was part of Willy's first trip to the US in support of his Cherrytree EP release Willy Moon.  He was met with enthusiastic crowds in NYC, LA and San Francisco.  His song "Yeah, Yeah" (included in the EP) is featured in the Apple iPop spot.  Watch it here.

Jessie Ware's EP comes out on Jan 15, 2013.  At the tail end of 2012, she came to the US to play shows in NYC and LA.  She'll be returning to play more concerts in Jan.  I took this photo in Dec 2012 in NYC during her riveting performance at The Box.  The mood she sets live is just as intense as the emotions she evokes in her recordings.  Check out her video for "Wildest Moments" here and get details on her upcoming US dates here.

I hope you enjoyed my photo blogs this year as well as this "Best of Martin's Photo Blog 2012."  Remember to tune in to the audio version of this blog entry on Dec 31st and Jan 1st on Cherrytree Radio.  For other fun, end-of-the-year programming on Cherrytree Radio, you can check here.

Gotta love the Ellie and Martin pic. Such a HUGE and amazing compliment to both the artists and label itself for having two consecutive Billboard No. 1's of the year. Times like this make me realize why I take such pride in being a Rec'er!
