When it’s a sweltering day here in the office, give us the chance to stay in AC and we’re golden.
But give us a chance to hang out with music duo The Knux and we’ll be hot-footing it to the West Village faster than you can say “hip-hop.”
Not that they really need an introduction, The Knux are New Orleans born and bred brothers Joey and Krispy, who are making waves in the music industry with their rock-tinged, alt hip-hop style.
The guys have celebrated industry success with their debut album Remind Me in 3 Days, making appearances at a variety of music festivals and touring with the likes of The Roots, Lupe Fiasco and DJ AM.
Looking swell in their matching shades and souped-up Converse, we chatted with the brothers about their style, inspiration, and – most importantly – music, while on the set of their video “Run,” featuring Kid Cudi.
When someone says their inspiration comes from “not giving a fuck”, it’s only natural to want to know more. It didn’t take long before the brothers dished about their musical influences – including jazz from their hometown roots in Louisiana and ‘70s rock icons The Sex Pistols.
Krispy had a good handle on how to make sense of their eclectic source of creativity, explaining, “As long as artists care about what they’re doing, that inspires us… it’s more impressive than spitting out Top 10 singles or having the best voice in the world.”
After our chat with Joey and Krispy, we got an unexpected treat in getting to talk with stylist extraordinaire—and quintessential California girl—Katharine Polk.
“We’ve never worked together before, but I listened to their music and was super stoked to do this; the song is really fun. It’s really my aesthetic; everything I do is really rock and roll, from editorials to clientele. I try to pull a lot of things after researching the artist to make them feel comfortable. I don’t want to come into a job and have them feel like they’re putting on a costume.” With pulls from John Varvatos, All Saints, and Cheap Monday, it was easy to see that Katharine and The Knux were a match made in heaven.
At this point Krispy made a crack about how Katharine is known for putting men in dresses for her edgier projects, to which she let out a contagious burst of laughter. “I am known for putting men in dresses, it is kind of my thing!”
Check out some behind the scenes pictures and while you wait for the video to be released, listen to the track right here.
