Meet Vancouver's New Dance/Pop Sensation: Tyrell Witherspoo

Having shared the stage with artists such as Destineak, Wynter Gordon and the legendary Martha Wash, Tyrell Witherspoon is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. This former CW "Hellcats" dancer released his first single 'Letting Go' in March of 2011. Shortly after, Tyrell rocketed into the Vancouver music scene. His music video for the track garnered him performances opening for the legendary Martha Wash and gained him a coveted spot singing at the opening ceremonies for the 2011 North American Outgames. This summer during Vancouver's gay pride, Tyrell opened for dance floor diva Wynter Gordon.

"I am a dancer as well as a singer, so I want to make sure that I can make music that my friends and new listeners can dance to. I want to tell a story in my lyrics that you can relate to. Whether it's love, a break-up, a hook-up or remembering what it was like to be young and get your first car, I hopefully have a song for you."

Tyrell's first solo EP titled "DANCE WITH ME" was released on iTunes, and Spotify on September 6th to critical acclaim. What makes this EP so special is that Tyrell not only wrote the lyrics to all the songs but self-produced and engineered the tracks as well on his own laptop. This proved to be quite the learning curve for Tyrell.

"I've always loved making music and plunking around on the piano or my guitar but that's really as far as it had gone up until this point. Learning how to build a track from scratch took some time but it was a great learning experience. I love self-teaching myself how to do things and this was no exception."

Following the release of his debut EP, Tyrell headed back to the stage to partake in the Vancouver Opera's production of West Side Story where he played the role of Baby John.

"West Side Story has always been a dream show for me to do, so I am really fortunate to be a part of this production and share the stage with some really amazing and talented singers and dancers. I cannot wait to get started."

Following the show, Tyrell hit the studio hard to begin work on new music to release in the summer and fall of 2012. He released the single Glow in December and garnered and national radio airplay. This past June, Tyrell took a stab at a more mature dance sound with One Step Closer with a music video to be released shortly. You can catch Tyrell on stage at both Vancouver and Calgary Pride Festival this year.
